Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is also called ubiquinone, a name that signifies its ubiquitous (widespread) distribution in the human body.1Your body makes CoQ10 and it uses it as the energy for your cells. CoQ10 is actually transformed into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy on which the body runs. CoQ10 functions as an antioxidant!
You may be asking if you need to use this as a supplement. Please look at the chart that I put together regarding the Coenzyme Q10 Benefits and see if you think it wise to use a supplement. Would I take a supplement? Yes, and I do because my family has a history of heart disease and Alzheimer's. Being that there are not many adverse reactions, I do take a supplement that contains Coenzyme Q10. After all, who wants a longer life without quality of life?
Most doctors recommend that CoQ10 be taken with meals to improve absorption. Typically, adult levels of supplementation are usually 30–90 mg per day, although people with specific health conditions may supplement with higher levels (with the involvement of a physician). Most of the research on heart conditions has used 90–150 mg of CoQ10 per day.1You may want less than this if you are using as a supplement and not actually treating a current ailment but trying to fend off heart conditions.
Coenzyme Q10 is found in fish and organ meats. You will not be able to get the amount you need if you are serious about increasing Co Q10 significantly unless you use a high quality supplement, such as Truestar. They carry pharmaceutical grade supplements that are organic, have no synthetics, and no fillers. They also follow the European and U.S. GMP and use ISO certified labs. Research suggests that the gel capsule is more effective than the granular form.2
Do not supplement with Coenzyme Q10 if you are taking blood thinning mediation such as Warfarin or Coumadin! CoQ10 can negate the effects of this medication!1,2
